The Elements@Stevens

Singapore
2004-2007

The project consists of 17 Apartments with a total GFA of 1967 m² and a net saleable area of 2370m² constructed over 5-storeys on a tapering width site only 1405 m² in size. An innovative solution of a tapered linear block juxtaposed with a free standing pavilion block linked by sky bridges that in turn define the borders of the protected water courtyard landscape they share as a visual and physical amenity. Individual cantilevered balconies allow each unit to engage directly with the landscape, with the pavilion block visually floating above the water. The sky bridge between the blocks marking the gateway to the external landscape connection that in itself bridges across the vehicular access and substation of the semi basement and basement level below.

The ‘Balcony Wing’, comprising three penthouses and twelve apartments each with their own individual characteristics. ‘The Pavilion’ is a shaded glass box containing two duplex apartments that appears to float above the swimming pool. Anchoring the two forms is the pool conceived as ‘courtyard’, conducive to family and communal living. Legibility is given to the hierarchy of spaces by the clear or partially abstracted expression of the building’s functions, contrasts of scale and form, the use of materials and their contrast, mixed construction technology and detail to describe and reinforce selected elements within the architectural narrative and response to the site.

The concept within the confines of a small private site has allowed a free-form design that offers both shelter and exposure to Individuals allowing them a choice of experience. Diversity within unity as contemporary expression for modern living.
