AWWA School

Singapore
2019-2022

The major addition and alteration to an existing primary school at 50 Bedok Reservoir Crescent is to transform the building to a Special Education School.

The existing primary school building is 40 years old. It is located on a sloping terrain being higher at the school entrance and sloping towards the big drainage reserve at the south of the school site.

To transform the existing building into a special education school, with all the existing building blocks retained, thus becomes a challenge for the designers. The existing building is below the MOE design standard requirements, especially the common corridor width and the various blocks are connected by steps due to the difference in floor levels. To meet MOE’s design standard requirements and allow barrier-free access to all levels and rooms, a major extension of the corridor & handicap ramps is proposed. The existing building block is reconfigured to meet AWWA school requirements. As the building is 40 years old, all the roofs are re-constructed with new roofs.
