Singapore National Theatre

Singapore
1965

The National Theatre was completed in 1963 and officially opened to coincide with the South-east Asian Cultural Festival held on August 8th of the same year.

The plan was to provide for performances of multi-cultural presentations as well as Western ballet and orchestral music.

It served as the biggest venue in Singapore with 3490 seats under the cantilevered roof with provision for seating on the sloping lawn for an additional 10,000.

Although the brief called for a semi open-air environment for the audience, large mechanical fans were installed on the lower wings of the auditorium which supplied 135,000 cu feet per minute of area, distributed to the stage as well as the seats in the front rows, where because of the enclosing structure to house the stage lighting and sound console equipment, natural ventilation was greatly reduced.
